McCuy Reservoir Butterfly Valve refurbishment

HVES were engaged in 2011 to refurbish and upgrade five 18 inch Boving Butterfly valves that had been in service since for approximately 35 years at McCuy reservoir. By refurbishing the existing valves no change was required to the adjoining pipework.

The original hose seals had perished and the original discs were heavily corroded and unsuitable for reuse. HVES redesigned the seat geometry and sealing mechanism. New cast discs and solid rubber disc seals were manufactured. The new seal arrangement has a long life and is capable of drip tight sealing.

The gearbox actuator was also completely dismantled, cleaned and rebuilt to fully operational condition as part of the refurbishment program.

Before

The disc and seal retaining ring were heavily corroded with significant material loss at the edges. The Valve body was structurally sound and suitable for refurbishment.

After

The original Bronze seat was re-profiled to suit the new resilient solid seal. With the seal properly adjusted the valves are drip tight. Two valves shown here ready to reinstall following factory testing.
